^C^1Thousand Miler

^CKaren Middaugh

In ^1Thousand Miler^0, you compete against another driver in a grueling 1000
mile race. Like real racers, you must deal with accidents, blown-out tires,
and other hazards. But ^1Thousand Miler^0 is not an arcade-style game. Instead,
it is a computerized version of the popular card game, "Mille Bournes."
^1Thousand Miler^0 rewards strategy rather than reflexes.

When you begin ^1Thousand Miler^0, both you and your opponent are lined up at
the starting light. (You may play another person or the computer.) Karen
Middaugh's nifty graphic screen shows the players' status: the condition of
their cars and tires, the amount of fuel they have, and the number of miles
they have covered.

Below each player's display, the computer deals seven cards to the players.
There are 106 cards in the ^1Thousand Miler^0 deck. Some cards are "hazard" cards
that you play to hinder the progress of your opponent. If you play a "flat
tire" card on your opponent, for example, he will be stuck until he can play a
"remedy" card. In this case, your opponent would need to play a "spare" card
to get up and running. Note that when the game begins, both you and your
opponent must play a "roll" remedy card to get moving. If a player cannot
play, he must use his turn to discard a card and draw another.

Once you are up and running, you play mileage cards (25, 50, 75, 100, 200)
to accumulate mileage. If your opponent plays a "speed limit" hazard on you,
however, you may only play cards up to 75 miles until you play the proper
remedy card. Also keep in mind that you must travel 1000 miles exactly: if you
have travelled 975 miles, only playing a 25 mile card will complete the race.

In addition to hazard, remedy, and mileage cards, there are also a few
"safety" cards that turn up from time to time. Safety cards render your car
immune from certain types of hazards. If you draw a "puncture proof" saftey,
for example, your opponent cannot give you a flat tire. The safeties held by
each player are displayed at all times.

For more information on the different types of cards and other rules,
consult the instructions Karen has included with the program itself.
