Readme file for PC versions of 'The Hunt For Red October'


There are two versions of the game.  The normal version which requires
a 512K machine to run and the small version, which will run on a 256K
machine.

To run the normal version, boot up with MSDOS and then type in:
	HFRO
To run the small version, boot up the machine with MSDOS making sure that
no ramdiscs or resident programs are installed, then type in:
	HFRO256

The differences between the versions do not affect gameplay much, they
are as follows:
	1. No Hydrophonics
	2. No ship recognition chart
	3. No loading music
	4. No help text
	5. Less attractive Atlantic Map
	6. Less ships displayable on the periscope view
	7. Night scope is solid blue instead of a darkened sea view

Changes to v1.6: 27th January 1988

	The main menu now has an option to switch off the engine noises,
	which were found to annoy some people with their continuous
	droning.  With engine noise switched off, other sound effects are
	still enabled, such as sonar pinging and explosions. 

Changes to v1.7: 2nd February 1988

	Bug fixed in loader, which caused DOS 2.1 to hang up after quitting
	game. 
	Bug fixed, which left "dead" ships on Atlantic ESM display after
	loading in saved positions. 
	Added code to check for correct game version when loading saved
	positions. 

Changes to v1.8: 6th February 1988

	Correct setting of motors after loading of game.
	Addition of a few forgotten variables to save game position
	Correction of cursor over load error window
	Removal of cheat mode from distribution version!!
