"You must be tired and hungry," says
Harriet. "Why don't you have supper
with me? We're having some corn bread
and peas."<
<
"Thank you, Mrs. Tubman," you say.

"We appreciate your help," says
Harriet. "For every passenger on the
Underground Railroad aided by a
conductor, there are hundreds who
travel alone by the North Star."<
<
"Why did you first escape?" you ask.<
<
"I was beat as a youngster," begins
Harriet. "See this scar on my head? The
overseer hit me with a weight."

@ENTER,102
*102
Harriet continues, "Last year I left my
family in Maryland, followed rivers,
the North Star...hid myself in a
haystack. Why I even spent a week
hidden in the potato hole of a cabin
belongin' to free Negroes..."

Harriet says, "But, lo and behold...
when I set foot in Pennsylvania, I
looked at my hands to see if I was
the same person now I was free. There
was such a glory over everything, the
sun came like gold through the trees,
and over the fields, and I felt like
I was in heaven."<
<
You try to imagine how she felt.

"Listen chile, your journey tomorrow
will be dangerous," says Harriet. "I
got a few things to tell you 'bout it.
First, folks call me Moses...I guess
because I lead Negroes to freedom in
Canada.<
<
"There is a password that will get you
into these stations. It has my name in
it. Tell me the password."

"That's the wrong password, [NAME]. The
right one is MOSES SENT ME," Harriet
reminds you.

Harriet smiles. "I'm glad you know the
password. Only trust people who answer
your password with 'Welcome friends'.
This should help you avoid a nasty
creature about these parts that goes by
the name of Ruffin. He is an evil man.
He's a slave catcher who would gladly
return your passengers to their slave
owners."
|9
@ENTER,108
*108
Harriet continues, "And Ruffin's also
been known to use hot irons to brand
the hands of people who help runaways
with 'S.S.' for 'slave stealer'."

Your stomach turns and you feel queasy.
Ruffin sounds really scary!

Harriet says, "If you follow this
'train schedule' you should avoid
Ruffin. But you must arrive at the
stations by the days listed. Let's take
a look at it now."

"We've got to hurry, or we'll never get
to the next stop on time!" you say.<
<
"Let's get going!" says Clarissa.

You hear a muffled noise outside and
then a knock on the door.<
<
"Your passengers are here!" says
Harriet smiling. "Let's meet them!"

A short black woman with gray hair
walks into the room with two small
children clutching her skirts.<
<
"My name is Clarissa," she says. "These
are my children, Joe and Ruth."<
<
"Welcome. My name is Harriet Tubman and
this is [NAME]," says Harriet.<
<
"Pleasure," you say.<
<
"[NAME] will assist you in your travel
to freedom!" says Harriet.

"I've come all this way from Georgia
with these two little rascals, Joe an'
Ruth," says Clarissa. "Ain't been too
easy."<
<
"I'll help you if I can," you say.<
<
"Thanks be to you," says Clarissa.
"We're going to meet my husband Henry
in Canada."

Clarissa continues, "My first baby was
taken outta my arms and sold on the
auction block. I stopped speakin' for a
year. That's when my hair lost its
color," says Clarissa quietly. "Right
after, Henry made his way to Canada and
got a job as a blacksmith. He sent us
the money he made to get us together
again!"

"We best get some grub into these
younguns' tummies and pack them off to
bed. I hear we head north tomorrow
night," says Clarissa.<
<
"Yes, to get a good start on Ruffin,"
says Harriet, "you all need a good
night's rest!"

The next night, you pack a bundle of
supplies. You take a loaf of bread, a
water jug, biscuits, and salt pork. You
carry them wrapped in a light blanket.<
<
Clarissa, Joe, Ruth, and you wave to
Harriet as you leave.<
<
"Remember: Moses sent you!" she says,
waving good-bye.

You walk for hours. You enter thick
woods. You are supposed to find the
cave near Trenton, but you'd better
find the North
Star first to get your bearings.

In the darkness, you stumble onto the
cave.<
<
"We can stay here until tomorrow
sundown," you say. "We'll be safe."<
<
You all eat some bread and salt pork
and fall asleep as the sun rises. You
have a long trip later tonight...
|13
@ENTER,124

Later that night you all leave for the
station outside of Morristown.<
<
You stay off the main road and walk
silently, in single file. The night is
so still you can hear the sound of your
heart beating.
