"CHEE-OW," you say, as you plunge
into the Sicilian volcano of Mt. Etna.

"But you just ate," replies N2FACE
seriously.

"Whoever programmed you, N2FACE, is
obviously a prize comedian," you say,
laughing. "'Ciao' means good-bye in
Italian."

The Firefly sinks slowly into Mt. Etna's
mass of orange-red magma. Magma is
molten rock that is still inside the
earth.

"Launch a metal probe to see if there is
a bomb here," you tell N2FACE. Moments
later, the torpedo-like probe streaks
into the molten rock inside Mt. Etna.

"PRESTO!" you say, when the probe
detects a bomb inside Mt. Etna.

"I don't have any toes for you to
press," says a confused N2FACE.

"Very funny, N2FACE," you reply. "Now
hurry and attach a cable to the bomb's
computer."

As soon as the cable is attached,
numbers begin to whiz across the
Firefly's computer screen. It is a set
of secret code numbers. N2FACE is able
to figure out only part of the code!

"I did it!" you shout happily when the
red light on the bomb winks out. Thanks
to your math skills you have defused the
bomb.

"Einstein would have been proud, I'm
sure," observes N2FACE.

"Everything's relative, N2FACE. It
wasn't that difficult," you say.

"Such modesty is not like you," replies
N2FACE. "Are you too busy blushing or
are you ready to hear the information I
have on Mt. Etna?"

solve it right now."

Mt. Etna towers 10,703 feet above the
Mediterranean island of Sicily. The
volcano has a long history of eruptions.
In 396 B.C., a huge stream of lava 24
miles long and two miles wide is said to
have stopped an invading Carthaginian
army. In A.D. 1669, another eruption
killed 20,000 people. The most recent
big eruption happened in 1928, when a
lava flow destroyed the village of
Mascali.

The metal probe finds no sign of a bomb
in Mt. Etna. "There's nothing here,
chief," you radio back to Commander Pum
S. Stone.

"Then what are you doing in Sicily?"
screams the commander. "Or perhaps you
felt like some spaghetti for lunch? Now
get moving!"

"HOLA!" you cry as the Firefly descends
into the Mexican volcano of Paricutin.

"That's too big to be called a hole in
the ground," says N2FACE. "It's more
like a crater full of spicy, hot refried
beans."

"That's lava, N2FACE. The lava in
Paricutin is thicker than in many
volcanoes because it has different
ingredients," you explain.

Paricutin suddenly appeared on
February 20, 1943, and grew more than
1,000 feet in 10 weeks. It started as a
thin wisp of white smoke coming from a
crack in a cornfield. One day later it
was a cone of ash and lava 25 feet high.
It exploded one week later. The force of
the explosion sent lava and rock flying
high in the air. The volcano has been
quiet recently.

Paricutin is an example of a cinder
cone, a relatively small volcano made up
of lava and debris heaped up around the
volcanic vent or hole.

The metal probe finds nothing. "There
doesn't appear to be a bomb in
Paricutin, chief," you tell Commander
Pum S. Stone over the radio.

of that corn field? The world is about
to blow up!" screams the commander.
"Now get out of there and find those
bombs!"

"Bump your head?" asks N2FACE.

explodes in bright orange flashes.
Slowly, the Firefly sinks into the
depths of Krakatoa.

"I don't think we should hang around
here very long," says N2FACE. "Krakatoa

look for a bomb. The probe shoots out,
leaving behind a stream of bubbles in
the churning lava.
