############################################################### LucasArts Entertainment Co. LLC Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith 1/20/98 ############################################################### Thank you for your purchase of Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith. We recommend that you read this file to get the most up-to-date information about installing, running, and maxi- mizing performance of Mysteries of the Sith. For additional information and in-depth technical documentation about specific hardware, we recommend reading the Online Troubleshooting Guide which can be accessed by clicking on TROUBLESHOOTING on the Mysteries of the Sith Launcher. Also, for the very latest updates related to Mysteries of the Sith, be sure to check the LucasArts Multiplayer Home Page at www.rebelhq.com and the LucasArts Website at www.lucasarts.com. 1) General Information a) Lightsaber b) Assigning Stars for Force Powers c) Disc Switching Information d) Installing and Uninstalling e) Laptop Systems f) Task Switching g) Game Crash Issues h) Pausing the Game i) Single Player Problems j) Multiplayer Problems 2) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop a) Active Desktop 3) Gameplay Issues a) Game Speed/Resolution Issues b) Skipping Cutscenes c) Pressing Any Key does not Always Load Last Savegame d) Console Commands 4) Control Issues a) Keyboard Issues b) Mouse Issues c) Joystick Issues d) Sound Issues 5) Multiplayer Games a) Number of Players Supported b) Sending Audio Messages b) Network Provider Information c) Server Suggestions 6) How to Contact LucasArts ############################################################### 1) General Information a) Lightsaber * To activate the Lightsaber, use the "1" key. It is now a toggle selection between Lightsaber and Fists. b) Assigning Stars for Force Powers * When you start as Kyle (and again when you start as Mara), you will have unassigned stars. You will be able to assign them when you finish the level. This allows you to start with a higher rank than in Jedi Knight, and still have the flexibility to assign stars where you want them. c) Disc Switching Information * We have found that some computers with Windows 95 OSR2 and certain CD-ROM drives may bring up a Windows con- firmation box if you try to eject the Mysteries of the Sith CD. This box is not visible under the game. If you try to eject the CD-ROM while Mysteries of the Sith is running and it doesn't open, press enter on your key- board to confirm the unseen Windows message. This should allow you to continue normally. d) Installing and Uninstalling * Please make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive in order to play Mysteries of the Sith. We have found that if you have less than 20 MB of free space on your hard drive after installing, you may not be able to start the game. * See the Online Troubleshooting Guide for more infor- mation regarding space requirements. e) Laptop Systems * Mysteries of the Sith has not been tested with laptop systems and therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility. Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible to configure a game that would work with all of them. Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a gaming machine because of memory configurations, their microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e. no place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily designed to be used with productivity software. * The other common problem is that laptop systems will attempt to compress the traditional version of the standard 101 function keyboard (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller key config- uration. This is usually done by relying on multi- function keys that allow the user to assign different functions to the same key. Unfortunately, this has been known to cause problems with our games. f) Task Switching (or ALT+TAB) * If you need to return to your desktop while playing Mysteries of the Sith, please use the ALT + TAB combination to task switch. We recommend that you press ESC to go to the menu before task switching. g) Game Crash Issues * If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems, you should try to properly exit Windows and reboot your computer. (As a rule, you should never turn off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This will help to prevent possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. * If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears frozen, please press ESC, Space Bar, or Enter before trying anything else. * If you encounter extended black screens, reboot. h) Pausing the Game * You can pause the game during the cutscenes by press- ing the spacebar. To unpause it, and resume the game, press the spacebar again. * To pause the game during play, press the ESC key. The game will be suspended while in the Option Screen. Note that you cannot pause a Multiplayer game. If you enter the Options menu while in a multiplayer game, you will be vulnerable until you return. i) Single Player Problems * Do not use Force Pull on the Heavy Explosives in Level 5. If you try to Force Pull the Heavy Explosives, when you pick them up they will not appear in your inventory and you will be unable to finish the level. If this should occur, load your last save game, and do not use Force Pull when you re-encounter the Heavy Explosives. j) Multiplayer Problems * There is a chance, that if you take the ysalamiri from a frozen player immediately after smashing his/her car- bonite shell, you may see more than one red ysalamiri bubble in the game. To prevent this, wait a moment before retrieving the ysalamiri from a frozen player. * If you kill a player who is in the process of joining the game, there is a chance that he/she may crash out of the game. To prevent this, don't attack players until they are fully active in the game. * If you fall from a level and respawn in the air repeated- ly, there is a chance that the game will get into a state where you will respawn in the air if you should fall again in that game. If this occurs, the best solution is for you to quit out, restart, and rejoin the game. 2) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop a) Active Desktop * If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, we recommend that you disable Active Desktop before playing Mysteries of the Sith as it uses memory and resources that the program may need. 3) Gameplay Issues a) Game Speed/Resolution Issues * A slow frame rate has been shown to affect gameplay in Mysteries of the Sith. On computers with slow framerates, Lightsaber Attacks may not always connect and the game difficulty will be greater. You may want to try using your Force Powers in areas where the lightsaber's performance is affected by a poor frame- rate. If you have a Pentium computer without 3D acceleration, we recommend that you play in a lower resolution (Such as 320X200, 320X240, 512x384). Adjust the screen size smaller to increase your frame rate using the + or - keys. Resolutions above 512x384 may not perform well in full screen unless you have at least a Pentium 133 with a good 3D accelerator card. * Switching between the menus and the game using 3D Hardware acceleration may cause your display to flicker to the desktop and back. This is normal. * Clicking the "Backbuffer in system memory" check box on the Display Setup menu will improve performance on some computers without 3D hardware acceleration. Only enable this option if you experience severe frame rate problems when viewing transparent glass and water. This has to do with your video card's memory access speed. This feature is not compatible with all video cards and may cause problems on certain systems if enabled. * The Map Overlay increases the pressure on video mem- ory. If your computer slows down when this is turned on, consider using it when standing still or play with the map turned off. b) Skipping Cutscenes * To skip cutscenes, press the Escape key. c) Pressing Any Key does not Always Load Last Savegame Normally, when you die, you can press any key to load the last savegame or quicksave you made on the level. There are a few instances where this is not the case. * Timed levels. If you die because the time runs out, the level will be restarted, so that you'll have the chance to race against the clock from the start. * Tricky puzzle levels. If you die because you complete a puzzle in the incorrect order, the level will restart. This is to prevent you from being stuck on a puzzle that cannot be solved. d) Console Commands Console commands have been included with the game to accommodate advanced player functions not available in the User interface. To access the Console In Single player, press 'T' then type your command and press Enter. Single player Console commands: * Kill Kills player and restarts the level or loads a saved game. If you get stuck or your character's position becomes unplayable for any reason, type 'kill' at the console to escape that position. To access the Console in Multiplayer, press 'T' then 'Tab'. Type in your command and press Enter. Multiplayer Console commands: * Team Only works in Team Play using the Jedi Training levels. Type "Team" followed by a space and the number of the team you wish to join (1=red, 2=gold, 3=blue, and 4=green). This makes it possible to organize games with 4 teams. Example "Team 3". Team Play defaults to just two teams (red and gold). * Kill Kills player and respawns in a different area should the character's position become unplayable for any reason. Using this command subtracts one kill from your score. * Endlevel Allows the Host to end the current level without aborting the game. This is especially useful for computers serving over the Internet, allowing them to move the game to the next level without a break in connection. The Host must uncheck the Single Level Only check box when setting up a game so that the Multiplayer levels will loop. * Ping The in-game Ping command allows players to determine the quality of your Internet connection to other players from within the game. The ping command sends some data and times how long it takes to be sent back by the target computer. Ping times are expressed in terms of Milliseconds. A ping time lower than 500ms is optimal for Internet play (Note: The values returned by the in-game ping will generally be higher than the Protocol-level Ping command included with Windows 95. For more information on the MS-DOS Ping Command, see the section in the original Jedi Knight Manual on Playing Mysteries of the Sith over the Internet. Host and Client: To ping any other player, type "ping " from the Console where is the name of the player in the game (Do not use the <> or quotes). Host: To ping all clients, type "ping x" from the Console, where x is anything other than a valid player name in that game. You can use "x" if no players have that as a name. Client: To ping the host just type "ping" at the console and press Enter. * Kick Used only by the Host to eject a player from a multiplayer game. At the console, type "kick " where is the name of a client's player in the game (Do not use the <> or quotes). 4) Control Issues a) Keyboard Issues * The "Slow" function mapped to the capslock key re- quires that you hold down the caps lock key. * It is recommended that you avoid using the Windows 95 key while playing Mysteries of the Sith. There is a checkbox to disable this key in the keyboard configur- ation screen, which is accessible by pressing ESC and choosing Setup -> then Controls -> then Keyboard. b) Mouse Issues * The Mouse Config screen lists all of the mouse axis buttons supported by Mysteries of the Sith. Your mouse may not support all of the features listed. * The mouse Y Axis, or up and down, defaults to an air- plane style control (pitch), with forward being down, back being up. * If you have an Intellipoint mouse with a scroll wheel, you may need to open up the Mouse Control Panel so that the Intellipoint Mouse icon appears on the taskbar be- fore playing Mysteries of the Sith to make sure that the wheel functions as a 3rd mouse button and mouse axis in the game. c) Joystick Issues * Joysticks: If you wish to use a joystick to play Mysteries of the Sith, you must enable the Joystick (Uncheck the "disable joystick" box in the Setup/ Controls/Joystick menu. We recommend you leave the Joystick disabled if you are controlling the game with the mouse or keyboard. * Configure Joysticks to Windows 95 controller ID 2 or below. Any higher and the game will not recognize the stick. Check this in the 'Game Controllers' Control Panel. * Uncontrolled Spinning can be corrected by calibrating your joystick from either inside the game (in the Setup/Controls/Joystick/Configure menu), or from out- side the game, from your Game Controllers Control Panel. This happens mostly with analog joysticks. * We have created several custom configuration files for various joysticks to use with Mysteries of the Sith. You can load these by going to the Setup menu in the game. Select Controls, then Options, then Load Configuration. Choose your joystick from the list. If your joystick is not listed, you will need to create your own configur- ation or you can check with the manufacturer of your special control device to see if they provide custom configuration files for Mysteries of the Sith. The files use the *.CTM extension and should be copied into the Controls folder on your hard drive where the game is installed. NOTE: The configuration files that shipped with Jedi Knight are not compatible with Mysteries of the Sith. d) Sound Issues * If you find that the music levels are too loud or too quiet and you are unable to change the volume through the Mysteries of the Sith options menu, then you may adjust these levels using the Windows Volume Control icon. Use the ALT + TAB keys to go to the desktop, then double-click on the speaker icon in the corner of the taskbar. 5) Multiplayer Options a) Number of Players supported * The number of players possible on an Internet game is very dependent upon your Internet provider, the speed of the connection, the speed of the computer serving the game, and the speed of the client computers joining the game. With a very fast connection and server, it is possible to exceed the supported numbers listed in the manual, but we cannot recommend or support such connections. b) Sending Audio Messages You can send audio messages to other players in multiplayer games by typing the name of the .wav file you want to send while in Talk Mode. * Everybody must have the same .wav's installed with the exact same file name in order for everyone to hear the sound. * Create a folder named Sound inside the Resource folder in the directory where you installed Mysteries of the Sith. The default location is: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\MotS\Resource\Sound. * Example: "taunt1.wav" will play taunt1.wav on everybody's computer that has that same sound installed. * To program these taunts, you will need to assign them to a number key. To do this: type 't', then #= and press ENTER. Example: 't', then '1=gotcha.wav', then . This assigns this wave file to the number 1. * To play the sound after assigning it: type 't', then '1' and press ENTER. Example: 't', then '1', then . * The name of the file will appear of the screen of the person sending the taunt, but they will not be able to hear it. All other players in the game should hear the taunts if they are installed in the proper location on all computers. * Please limit the size of the wave files that you use to less than 200KB. It is recommended that you use smaller files, around 35KB, because the sounds could affect the gameplay, especially on a low end computer. c) Network Provider information * TCP/IP Provided that you are not hosting the game, if you lose connection to your ISP, Mysteries of the Sith will mini- mize to allow the connection dialog to appear on screen. You should not attempt to connect to your provider and rejoin the game. This will have a negative affect on the other players in the game. Select Cancel. Mysteries of the Sith will remain active on your taskbar, but you will no longer be connected to the game. The most efficient way to exit Mysteries of the Sith is to press CTRL-ALT-DEL, then select Mysteries of the Sith and click END TASK. If you prefer to maximize the game and exit through the game's escape menu, you may need to allow up to 3 minutes for DirectPlay to "Time Out". d) Host Suggestions * A Host with a slow network connection or frame rate can deteriorate gameplay for all clients. The fastest computer with the best possible connection is the best choice for a Host. 6) How to Contact LucasArts LucasArts has set up a variety of services to provide you with information about our latest games, hint and gameplay assistance, and technical support. a) Hint Line U.
